Though they’re still the hottest team in baseball with wins in 14 of their last 17 games, the New York Yankees are suddenly dealing with a serious problem in their resurgent starting rotation: injuries. The Yanks placed ace CC Sabathia on the disabled list on Wednesday morning with a groin strain that will keep him until after the All-Star break (he’s expected to miss his next two starts). Then in their game against the Indians that afternoon, Andy Pettitte, who stabilized the New York rotation with his return to the big leagues last month, took a line drive off his shin that forced him to leave the game.
As of now, the extent of the injury to Pettitte is not yet known, but if it forces him to miss any extended length of time the Yankees could be in trouble. They’ve already had to put long man Freddy Garcia back in the rotation due to Sabathia’s injury, and would have to dip into the Triple-A ranks if they have to replace Pettitte as well.
