Prust signs with Montreal, Rangers replace him with Asham, Haley

The Rangers were not expected to bring back popular winger Brandon Prust after it became known that the 4th line player was seeking in excess of $2 million per season in free agency, which became a reality on Sunday when he signed a 4-year, $10 million deal with the Canadiens on the first day of free agency. Prust led the NHL in fights last season with 20, and chipped in 17 points (down from his career high of 29 the year before). But he priced himself out of the Rangers’ valuation, which had him pegged at about a $1.3-1.5 million per year player.

In his place, the team signed a pair of veteran enforcers in Arron Asham (2 yrs, $2m) and Michael Haley (2 yrs, value undisclosed). Asham, 34, now has the distinction of being the first player to play for all 5 Atlantic Division teams, having played most recently in Pittsburgh. Haley, 26, is likely headed for the AHL.

Perhaps it was general manager Glen Sather’s “I don’t think we’re going to get that one done” declaration to The Post a week ago Friday night that gave Brandon Prust the strong hint the Blueshirts would not meet his asking price on the free-agent market.
