The Rockets have recently agreed to a 3-year, $25.1 million deal with center Omer Asik. The 7-footer played two seasons with Chicago, providing them high production in low minutes. But because he is a restricted free agent, the Bulls can match Houston’s offer, but with a price of $25 million over three years (salaries of $5 million in each of the first two and $15 in the third), they probably will let him go.
Houston, on the other hand, has been looking to sign quality players this summer and Asik will be a nice pick up. He was one of the top defenders in the league (based on numbers), scoring in the 96th percentile in points allowed per possession. He has good size and athleticism, and at 25, the potential to become even more dominant on defense.
Although he boasted a high player efficiency rating, some feel Asik is too much of a gamble. He has never provided much offense and although young, many feel he has already reached his scoring potential (8 pts per 36 minutes). He has a habit of losing the ball and a turnover rate of 2.5/game. He does provide good defense, but is extremely prone to fouls and can quickly lose energy.
With more minutes, Asik could go either way. The center could tire out and lose the the aspect that makes him so valuable: his efficiency. On the other hand, his defensive ability could seriously disrupt the offensive flow of opponents and be a big assest for Houston. As they desperately need a center, the Rockets are willing to take a risk on Asik and have the cap space to overpay for him.
