Five arms the Tigers could pursue at the Deadline

Having started the year with some lofty expectations given the signing of Prince Fielder and the return of most of last year’s deep playoff team, most thought the Tigers would grab the AL Central by default and once again be a deep playoff contender. However, that has not been the case, as injuries, abysmal fielding, and a lackluster rotation outside of Justin Verlander has everyone in the motor city collectively scratching their noggins. Detroit is just 39-41, trailing both the White Sox and Indians in the AL Central.

Simply put, they need help, particularly in the pitching department. (An actual second baseman wouldn’t hurt either, but it’s a lot easier to hide a single infielder than it is to hide a starter.) Doug Fister is a walking injury, Rick Porcello is like a proverbial box of chocolates, Max Scherzer is nothing special, even when healthy, and Drew Smyly has regressed since his hot start to the year.

If the Tigers want to salvage their season there’s a few guys they should consider bringing in.
