Aging Jaromir Jagr can still shine in Dallas

The Dallas Stars continued their pursuit of the oldest roster in the NHL late on Tuesday night when they agreed to a one-year, $4.5 million deal with Jaromir Jagr. The 40-year-old future Hall of Famer joins fellow quadragenarian Ray Whitney, who signed a two-year deal with Dallas just days before.

After spending last season with the Flyers while battling hip problems, Jagr still managed to put up 54 points (19 goals, 35 assists) to help fuel one of the most potent offenses in the league. However, he was not considered a priority for a Flyers team that is looking to get younger. He had also targeted the Canadiens as his first choice, but apparently did not receive any interest from them.

A year ago, Jaromir Jagr's return to the NHL was one of the great sideshows of the free agency period.

The five-time NHL scoring champion went to ground after professing his love of Mario Lemieux and the Pittsburgh Penguins.

His agent, Petr Svoboda, looked like he had narrowed the field to a handful of teams, including Detroit, Pittsburgh and Montreal, before announcing to ESPN.com the night before free agency that even though he wasn't sure where Jagr was, he was going to open up the field and wasn't worried about signing on July 1, prompting both Detroit and Pittsburgh to withdraw their offers.
