Chase Headley is a trade target

Currently in the midst of his best season in the majors with 8 home runs, .372 OBP, and a .794 OPS, Padres third baseman Chase Headley is going to be one of the more talked-about names as we approach the July 31 trade deadline. As Buster Olney reports, Headley’s versatility (he can play third, first, or the outfield), career-best production, and very friendly contract mean that teams will be lining up to bid on his services.

Headley, 28, is making just under $3.5 million this season, and though he’s arbitration eligible next year, he likely won’t get much more than $5 million and can’t hit free agency until 2015. And for a team that’s currently 16 games under .500 and 13 out of first in the AL West, the Padres don’t exactly have a lot of pieces that they can sell off. Olney cites Carlos Quentin and Huston Street as other trade candidates in San Diego, but as he writes,

“Headley has more trade value than either of those two players right now, maybe as much as anyone in the market, because of his service time, and the position he plays. The only two third basemen with a higher on-base percentage than Headley are David Wright and Miguel Cabrera…Headley is in a different place in the market. The Padres would probably get something good for him, more now than at any time last winter, or next winter, when he’ll get more expensive.”

The Padres may have to deal Chase Headley, because the market for his services, and his contract, may never be better than it is now.
