Mission: Rebuilding the Celtics' bench

Last season, Boston Celtics’ bench was decimated from the get-go. Jeff Green's heart ailment, and later Chris Wilcox's similar condition left the C's bench paper thin.

Mickael Pietrus was able to provide somewhat of spark, but he was never able to return to formafter suffering a severe concussion, shooting just 22 percent from behind the arc in the month of April.

Keyon Dooling offered flashes of hope, but once Avery Bradley was sidelined in the postseason with small tears in his shoulder, it was only a matter of time before the rash of injuries caught up with the Celtics bench.

During the regular season, the Celtics’ starting five of Rajon Rondo, Bradley, Paul Pierce, Brandon Bass, and Kevin Garnett ranked ninth in the NBA in plus/minus, and with Ray Allen providing a needed spark coming off the bench, it appeared that Boston could be imposing force in the playoffs if they could stay healthy . The reality was that Boston got by more grit and guile than on talent, and yet still had two chances to close out the eventual champs in the Eastern Conference Finals.

Entering the offseason, Celtics President Danny Ainge had one priority: reconstructing the Celtics' bench to gear up for another run in the East. Still, before Ainge could address the bench, he had to free the Celtics from Garnett's massive $22.3 million cap hold. Check! In doing so, Ainge was able to retain their cap space and begin the rebuilding effort.
