The New Orleans Hornets are set to acquire Ryan Anderson in a sign-and-trade deal with the Orlando Magic. The 24-year-old will receive a four-year, $36 million deal with New Orleans and in return Orlando will receive Gustavo Ayon.
Orlando could have matched the offer as Anderson is a restricted free agent, but with financial flexibility in mind, the team opted to let him go. The power forward emerged as one of the Magic’s top assets and was second behind Dwight Howard in team scoring this season. He averaged career highs in points (16.1) and rebounds (7.7), earning him the NBA’s Most Improved Player Award and at 24, Anderson still has room to improve.
Some view Anderson as a complementary player and credit his success to Dwight Howard. As a “stretch 4” forward, Anderson forces defenses out to the perimeter. Because Howard demanded so much attention on the low post, Anderson was loosely guarded and often received open looks. The power forward thrived and was able to consistently knock down easy baskets; in New Orleans, he might see the same success.
After an excellent draft night, the Hornets are making smart moves for next season. Anthony Davis, the Hornets’ first and number 1 overall pick, dominated the NCAA and proved he was a force down low. Many believe he will have an immediate impact in the NBA and will be hard to defend. With Davis’ presence, Anderson might see looks similar to what Howard gave him in Orlando and continue to put up numbers.
The Magic, on the other hand, are showing sings of rebuilding as trading Anderson gives them more cap flexibility. If they intend to go after a player such as Andrew Bynum, who enters free agency after next season, letting go of Anderson was a smart move.
