As if it wasn’t undeserved enough for Pablo Sandoval to get the start at third base over MVP candidate David Wright, now the Mets will be gypped out of another starting position in the All-Star game on Tuesday. For reasons that defy explanation, Tony La Russa has selected the Giants Matt Cain over R.A. Dickey as the starting pitcher for the National League, despite the fact that Dickey has superior numbers in wins, strikeouts, ERA, WHIP, WAR, and oBAA.
Thanks to a ballot stuffing campaign in San Francisco, the Giants already have Sandoval, Buster Posey, and Melky Cabrera in the starting lineup (though to be fair, Cabrera deserves it), while the Mets have none. Not only that, but giving Dickey the start would have allowed him ample time to warm up with the catcher Posey before the game so that he can get used to receiving Dickey’s knuckleball.
In the AL, reigning Cy Young and MVP winner Justin Verlander will start the game, getting the nod over the likes of Jered Weaver and David Price.
