The Miami Heat recently added another shooting option to their already deadly offensive lineup when forward Rashard Lewis accepted the veteran’s minimum contract of $1.3 million. The former All-Star is not the player he once was, but is still a threat from downtown and ranks 8th (5th among active players) on the NBA’s career 3-point scoring leaders list.
The addition of Lewis comes just days after Miami signed future Hall-of-Famer Ray Allen, who is currently #1 on the career 3-point scoring list and well above any other active player. The two are likely to thrive in Miami, as the offense produces many open shots on the perimeter. With LeBron James, Chris Bosh, and Dwyane Wade on the floor, defenses are forced to collapse and double team, giving players on the perimeter plenty of room to shoot. So who better to have then two of the best long-range shooters of all-time?
Last season, Mike Miller was the benefactor of Miami’s offense and was among the top of the league in three-point percentage. Due to repccurring injuries, the Heat decided not to re-sign Miller, but the additions of Allen and Lewis have more than compensated for their loss. The two played five seasons together in Seattle and are ready to produce again in Miami.
Lewis has voiced his goals, claiming he already made a good amount of money in his career and at this point just wants to win a championship. Easy to say for a player who is making an extra $13.7 million next season after accepting a buyout from the Hornets, but he has put himself in a great situation to achieve his goal. The Heat looked unstoppable in the Finals and adding Lewis and Allen will only make them better.
Lewis has also commented on what he expects his role to be, and seems excited to take it. The veteran claimed, “You’ve got to double team Lebron…Wade…Bosh, and then you think they’re going to leave Ray Allen open? They’ve got to leave somebody open. So I get a million jumpers and have to be ready to knock them down.”
The additions of Allen and Lewis put Miami’s offense over the top, and it will be near impossible to successfully defend all of their weapons. If you think the Heat aren’t a serious threat to repeat, guess again.
