With the Chicago Bulls’ payroll already into the luxury mark, general manager Gary Forman has to wonder just how creative he can be without being forced to move one the more significant salaries that are otherwise putting a stranglehold on his books. As recently reported, Ronnie Brewer and C.J Watson’s options won’t be exercised. While the Bulls had to deal with a rash of injuries last season, they will most likely be forced to do so again in the early stages of the 2012-13 season as Derrick Rose will still be recovering from a torn ACL.
Chicago is trying to create some salary flexibility in order to add another backcourt scorer, and is reportedly sniffing around Courtney Lee, who they had their eye on two years ago at the trade deadline.
The Bulls have also reached an agreement with Kirk Hinrich on a reported 2yr/$6m deal using their tax-payer MLE. Hinrich will give the Bulls a stable veteran leader in the backcourt who shot 35 percent from beyond the arc last season in Atlanta, although 93.6 percent of those threes were assisted.
The Bulls are still in desperate need of play maker. Carlos Boozer hasn’t been able to provide them with much of punch on the block and struggles to create his own shot. As the crop of UFAs begins to thin, Chicago might be able to poach an under-the-radar scorer such as Delonte West or perhaps Brandon Rush (RFA). They also might have lean on rookie guard Marquis Teague to help provide some scoring off the bench.
