After posting a 6.84 ERA through 25 innings, reliever Brain Fuentes was released from the Oakland Athletics. The 11-year veteran has provided solid relief throughout his career, highlighted by four All-Star appearances. But despite his past success, the lefty could not find consistency this season, and as such Oakland will be happy to get the 36-year-old, who is in the last year of his short contract, off of their books.
Some teams have already shown interest in Fuentes, believing he can once again pitch well. The Cardinals have only two left-handers in their bullpen, one struggling and the other with only 4 innings of MLB experience. The team could benefit from the veteran’s leadership and he could be helpful for the lacking bullpen.
The Mets are also rumored to have interest in Fuentes. The team is desperate for bullpen help and has struggled specifically against left-handed batters. Although his numbers have been atrocious this season, he was very solid just last year. Perhaps a change of scenery and coaching will bring out the Fuentes of old. Over the course of his career, the reliever has a 3.58 ERA and 3.85 FIP. He is also extremely successful against lefties, highlighted by his 2.90 FIP against left-handers vesus a 4.20 against right-handers. If he can shut down left-handers like he did in the recent past, Fuentes could provide a big boost to the Mets’ bullpen.
