The Cardinals are at 46-40 and looking to improving. After losing Albert Pujols, some felt the team’s offense would struggle, but this has not been the case, as players have stepped up and St. Louis remains one of the most deadly offensive teams in the league.
As the deadline approaches, they will be looking to add some talent to their bullpen. With Cy Young winner Chris Carpenter out for the season, the Cardinals are lacking a true rotation. They are currently 2.5 games out in the NL Central and could use a defensive boost to push them ahead.
As they are planning on making a run in the playoffs this season, they are unwilling to trade from their current MLB roster. The team did, however, announce they are finally willing to move top prospect Shelby Miller. Before the season, Miller was ranked as baseball’s No. 8 overall prospect and is currently on the Cardinals’ Triple-A team.
As big names Cole Hamels, Ryan Dempster and Zach Greinke are ready to be traded, Miller is good bait. Along with a group of talented prospects, he might just be enough to bring a big name into St. Louis. The Cardinals would be sad to see Miller go, but they are focused on winning this season and need to make the necessary moves. If the Cardinals could pull a Miller centered trade for Greinke, then sign him to an extension, they might not miss their prospect so much.
