The Memphis Grizzlies have been relatively quite this offseason, yet according to Ronald Tillery of the Commercial Appeal, they are in discussions with the Minnesota Timberwolves around acquiring either Wayne Ellington, Wesley Johnson, or Martell Webster.
Minnesota, who singed Brandon Roy earlier this summer, has log jam on the wing and moving one if not two of those three for added depth up front is likely what Wolves general manager David Kahn is looking to do.
It was no secret that Memphis has been looking to augment their backcourt production, and they were thought to be a player for Ray Allen before he jumped ship and went to Miami. Jerryd Bayless, who agreed to a two-year deal, might have been the steal of the summer for the role he is going to be asked to play in Memphis. In the last three seasons Bayless has seen a rise in his production (PER: 7.2, 14.8, 17.7), which is important considering he has either been a trade chip, or on teams who haven’t had constant vision in building a team. Still, the Grizzlies need another guard who can offer them 10-15 minutes a night who can help space the floor for Zack Randolph and Marc Gasol to work in the paint.
Wayne Ellington has the friendlest salary for Memphis to absorb with roughly $2.08 owed this year and then is a restricted free agent next summer. In return, Memphis would most likely offer up Dante Cunningham or some other assortment of future draft compensation.
