With Lidstrom and Stuart gone and Suter in Minnesota, the Detroit Red Wings are looking at a big strikeout this offseason when it comes to upgrading their defensive corps. So it became even more important to retain those that they have under their control, which they took a step towards achieving on Wednesday by coming to terms with RFA Kyle Quincey, as reported by TSN’s Darren Dreger.
After acquiring Quincey at the deadline last year for what many considered to a be an overpayment (a first round pick), the Wings really had no choice but to retain him or else lose him for absolutely nothing, let alone create another void on their blue line. Even after the 26-year-old elected to go to arbitration, the Wings couldn’t seriously consider trading him. After making $3.125 million last year, his new deal is reportedly worth $7.5 million over 2 years ($3.75m cap hit), which could be considered a bit of an overpayment but also one that won’t have too much impact on the team’s finances given their oodles of cap space and the fact that it’s a short contract.
