Jed Lowrie will be out 4 to 6 weeks after suffering an ankle injury last Saturday. The shortstop was stretching to take a relay throw at second base and was slid into, causing him to sprain his ankle and twist his knee. Lowrie is happy he will not need surgery, but he will have to use crutches for at least a week before he can start rehabbing.
Losing Lowrie is a big setback for the already struggling Astros. The slugger was batting .253 with 36 RBIs and a team-best 14 home runs before injury, and was one of the only bright spots on a team that has batted just .201 in their last 15 games. He has now suffered an injury in each the past four seasons, and is turning into a liability.
Marwin Gonzalez will take over at shortstop for now, but GM Jeff Luhnow is considering other options. He claimed, “We need to consider other options, whether it’s bringing up somebody from Triple-A or looking outside the organization.” If Lowrie’s injury is pointing more towards a 6 week recovery, chances are the team will look elsewhere.
Unfortunately for the Astros, the market for shortstops in thin at the moment. Some possible options could be Yunel Escobar, Tyler Pastornicky, or Willie Bloomquist. With the deadline less than two weeks away, they’ll have to decide quickly.
The injury is also a blow to other teams. There have been rumors that the Astros were looking to move Lowrie at the deadline; Detroit is looking for a second baseman and was considering him for the job. Currently, their second basemen have a combined batting average of .201 with just 11 extra-base hits. The team is also looking for right-handed batters and although he is a switch hitter, Lowrie is considered much better as a righty. The Tigers will now have to look elsewhere.
