The Red Sox just can’t avoid injury this season. The team seemingly has all the necessary pieces to be a serious contender, minus some underperformance in the bullpen, but their lineup lacks consistency.
Boston has had a league leading 20 players on the disabled list, and at one point, half of their payroll was injured at the same time. Just as things were starting to look better, David Ortiz will go on the 15-day DL with a sore right heel. The former MVP was rounding the bases on teammate Adrian Gonzalez’s home run and began to hobble after touching second.
The injury comes immediately after the long awaited return of All-Stars Carl Crawford and Jacoby Ellsbury. Now, Boston will be sending another All-Star to the DL. “This (expletive) team is cursed,” claimed Ortiz. The slugger has carried the offense through setbacks and has been beyond important for Boston this season. He has emerged as the team’s leader, top producer, and is a fan favorite.
Although the injury is not very serious, it definitely kills the team’s morale and comes at a horrible time, as this is one of the most challenging stretches of Boston’s season. They have two more games against the first-place White Sox, followed by series with the first-place Rangers, first-place Yankees, and Detroit Tigers, who have won 8 of their last 10 games.
As the trade deadline is approaching, this will be a good test for the Red Sox. If they cannot manage to keep a consistent lineup, they may need to look elsewhere for help.
