Royals, Pirates Interested In Paul Maholm

Ryan Dempster and Matt Garza aren’t the only pitchers likely to leave the Cubs before the July 31 deadline. Rumors are beginning to circulate around lefty Paul Maholm.

Despite an ERA of 4.09 this season, Maholm has been red hot — especially in July. The 30-year-old is 3-0 and has allowed just 3 runs in 22 innings. He has been steadily lowering his ERA and is 3.32 with only eight homers allowed since his first two starts.

The Cubs are looking to rebuild and just about any veteran who can play effectively is a possible trade chip. The team has won 14 of their last 19, but at 38-53, they are turning their attention towards young talent. Maholm’s value has risen and any contender looking for a left-handed starter will be interested.

The Cubs are currently hosting a lot of scouts, as teams have shown interest in their trio of pitchers. Two teams that are looking specifically at Maholm are the Royals and Pirates. Kansas City has a good amount of prospects and is looking for a pitcher. Dempster and Garza are listed as possibilities, but Mahlom will cost much less. His career numbers are around the league average, but even those are better than their current rotation.

The Royals are also known to be looking for long-term help in the bullpen. They feel they are within two years of being a serious contender and are looking to sign players accordingly. Maholm’s $1.97 million contract ends after this season, but it contains a $6.5 million option for next year. If he continues to pitch well, the lefty could definitely see more years as a Royal.
