The search for consistency continues. Amidst injuries and other setbacks, the Red Sox are somehow 48-48. Despite many blows to the offense, they lead the league in runs scored (479) and are top 10 in team batting average, slugging percentage, and on-base percentage. The problem clearly lies with the pitching staff.
Supposed aces Jon Lester and Josh Beckett can no longer lead the team. Lester has a career-low 5.46 ERA this season and his most recent start shows no signs of improvement. The left-hander let up 11 earned runs in just 4 innings this Sunday in a 15-7 loss against Toronto. Beckett has not been much better. The once-respected pitcher has a 4.53 ERA and between starts from him and Lester, the team is 13-23.
If Boston hopes to contend, they must bring in help before the deadline. The team has apparently directed their attention towards two Marlins pitchers: Josh Johnson and Anibal Sanchez. Johnson owns a 7-year career ERA of 3.16, but has struggled this season. He’s had stretches of good pitching, highlighted by a 10-game stretch in May and June and will need to find consistency if he is to help Boston. Sanchez was a Red Sox prospect before making a name for himself with the Marlins. He has a 3.94 ERA, but has pitched horribly since June. He has shown signs of improvement, and his last three starts have been solid.
At the moment, the Red Sox can use any help available for their bullpen. They have the necessary offensive firepower, but with no support from the bullpen it’s hard to win games. Boston also has interest Matt Garza, but after he sat out on Saturday, they will likely pursue other pitchers. The team does not want to take a risk on an injured pitcher, as they need immediate help. Trade talks have been heating up between Boston and Miami, so something is bound to happen before the deadline.
