Stability still a top priority in Pittsburgh with Tomlin Extension

The Pittsburgh Steelers are without question one of the most successful organizations not just in the NFL, but in professional sports as whole. The Steelers, according to multiple sources including Ed Bouchette of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, have extended head coach Mike Tomlin for an additional three years, continuing the front office stability which has lead to only three coaches in the last 42 years. Year after year the Steelers continually have lost talented players to more lucrative contracts, yet somehow have only managed to miss the postseason tournament six times in the last 20 years.

Tomlin, who won the job in 2007, has a record of 55-25 during the regular season, a 5-3 record in the postseason, and a Super Bowl ring, is one the leagues best coaches in the league and the “gold standard which owners try to emulate in hiring head coaches,” according one NFC scout. Few teams have been able to work the draft as well as Tomlin and the Steelers front office, as they have sent 23 different drafted players to the Pro Bowl since 1999; a feat no other team in the modern age can boast of.

Pittsburgh is once again favored to win the NFC North, and with Tomlin signed through 2016 it’s highly doubtful the Steelers will be anything but playoff contenders.

The Steelers today announced they have extended coach Mike Tomlin’s contract for three years, through the 2016 season.
