Hamels signs six-year extension with Philadelphia

Scratch Cole Hamels off of the list of available pitchers on the trade market. The 28-year-old lefthander agreed to a 6-year deal worth $144 million to remain with the Phillies and avoid free agency this offseason. The deal is the second-largest in history for a pitcher, behind only the 7-year, $161m contract that the Yankees gave CC Sabathia in 2008.

The Phillies are out of contention in the NL East this season and at this point have no realistic hope of getting back in it, sitting in last place and 14 games back with a 44-54 record. That led to a lot of speculation that Hamels might be on his way out of town at the trade deadline next week in exchange for prospects to bolster the organization’s sparse farm system, after which the Phillies would try to bring him back during the offseason.

But the first priority all along was to extend their young ace before he could ever get to free agency, and regardless of where they end up this season, the Phillies have to feel good about their rotation for next year and beyond. Hamels is now the third Philadelphia pitcher to make over $20 million a season, joining Roy Halladay ($20m AAV through 2014) and Cliff Lee ($24.8m AAV through 2016).

Cole Hamels isn’t going anywhere.
