With Jahvid Best still not physically cleared to play, the Detroit Lions have decided to bolster their backfield by converting their Pro Bowl return specialist/wideout Stefan Logan into a running back this coming season. An undrafted free agent out of college, Logan has served as Detroit’s primary kick returner since 2010 and has dabbled at WR and tailback.
With this full conversion to RB, Logan is expected to serve as a scat back in passing situations and on third downs a la Darren Sproles of San Diego and Leon Washington of Seattle. He could add a different dimension to a Lions offense that ranked towards the top of the league in passing but struggled in short yardage and running situations.
“He reminds me a lot of (Saints running back Darren) Sproles,” says linebacker Stephen Tulloch. “He’s a guy you can do different things with. You can put him in the slot, you can put him in the backfield, you can run the angle. He’s a mismatch for a lot of (linebackers). He’s a guy that’s going to cause you to have a safety come down on him and cover him game plan-wise.” He’s quick, he’s explosive, and hopefully our offense can use him a little bit more this year because he is a vital piece to this team.”
