The first-place Reds are already without Joey Votto and now could be without second baseman Brandon Phillips, who left Tuesday’s game with a calf injury that he called “no bueno.”

The Reds won 7-6 against the Padres yesterday, but they lost second baseman Brandon Phillips and catcher Devin Mesoraco while doing so. Mesoraco left before the seventh inning because of dizziness and heat exhaustion, but should be back in the lineup before long. Phillips, on the other hand, might take longer to recover.
Phillips noted there were two separate occasions in Tuesday’s game when he felt pain in his calf. He left after hitting the eventual game-winning solo home run in the seventh inning. And although the club felt the All-Star’s injury was a “minor” strain, Phillips thinks it may be more.
The team’s medical director examined his calf and said the injury is worse than expected. “The calf is no bueno right now,” claimed the second baseman. This is now the second time in three days that Phillips has made an early exit. On Sunday, he left in the fifth inning due to a cramp in his calf. He did play an entire game on Monday, but admitted that he “hurt it just playing, period.”
Losing Phillips for any amount of time is a setback, but the Reds can’t afford to be without the Silver Slugger for long. They are already without MVP candidate Joey Votto for three-to-four weeks due to a torn meniscus. In 86 games, he has a .342 average with 14 home runs and 49 RBIs. Phillips was doing well to compensate for the loss, hitting .327 with 3 home runs and 12 RBIs in 14 games without Votto and .368 since the All-Star break.
The Reds, led by Phillips, have had no problem winning without their first baseman. They won 12 of 14 games and are dominating the National League, as their 62-41 record puts them in first place in the NL Central. But now they face problems. They are an average offense team already, and will suffer without Phillips. If they want to continue their hot streak, more players will have to step up in place of the two All-Stars.
