Assuming Mark Sanchez remains upright and effective, even ballyhooed backup doesn’t seem entirely sure of game-to-game duties this season.

All the reports about how the Jets are going to deploy backup quarterback extraordinaire Tim Tebow can take a backseat for now, because Tebow himself doesn’t even know what role he’s going to play. In an interview with ESPN Radio’s Stephen A. Smith, when asked about it, the Jets signal caller said, “That’s a good question, and I’m going to be 100% honest: I am not sure.”
Tebow to New York was the most talked-about move of the offseason, not only because of the wealth of attention he garnered in Denver last year, but because it came on the heels of the team giving starter Mark Sanchez a three-year contract extension. So with him firmly entrenched in the starting role, the obvious question becomes why a team would go out and acquire a backup like Tebow, who needs an entire system built around his unique skill set in order to be effective.
The only reasonable answer is that the Jets can’t be planning on using him as a traditional backup. The other possibilities reported thus far have included red zone specialist, Wildcat QB, glorified H-Back, and even a punt return decoy. But the fact that the Jets haven’t told Tebow what he’ll be doing every game is probably because they don’t know themselves just yet. They’ll be trying him in different packages throughout camp and the preseason to see what works, and will go from there.
The good news is that if you want an update on what Tebow’s doing, just be sure to tune into ESPN between the hours of 2 a.m. and 8 p.m.
