Cromartie was kidding, but he really might be the Jets' second best receiver

When asked in an interview about the possibility of the Jets’ coaching staff using him at wide receiver in certain packages this year, cornerback Antonio Cromartie acknowledged that it was something they were working on, then quipped that he might be the second best receiver on the team. It was a comment that some of the actual receivers like Chaz Schilens took umbrage at, though the two quickly cleared the air and Rex Ryan reminded everyone about being careful with what they say to the media (pot, meet kettle).

However, as innocuous as Cromartie’s comment may have been, was it really that far-fetched? The Jets have been looking for a legitimate wide receiver to line up opposite Santonio Holmes for three years now, and this season may be their toughest one yet in that regard. Braylon Edwards suffered from the drops, but he was still a legitimate deep threat, if not a true No. 1 wideout. Last year Plaxico Burress proved to be pretty useless between the 20s, leading to the Jets not re-signing him. And this year, the No. 2 job is completely up for grabs, with Patrick Turner, Jeremy Kerley, and rookie Stephen Hill.

The real problem the Jets have is actually not the lack of a No. 2 receiver, but a No. 1. Despite being very talented, Holmes has yet to prove that he’s capable of being the focal point of a passing attack in either Pittsburgh or New York, and with no one else for defenses to really worry about plus the Jets’ stated commitment to the running game, he could be facing his least productive season yet this year.

There are still plenty of chances for the unknowns on the Jets receiving corps, but the Jets wouldn’t be putting Cromartie out there if they weren’t worried about their ability to produce.

Cornerback says comments were blown out of proportion
