An enigma throughout much of his career, Jaime Garcia has been exactly that again in 2012. After a 2010 rookie campaign in which he posted a 2.70 ERA in 29 starts (6th best in the majors), Garcia struggled through an up-and-down season last year in which he was very good at home (2.55 ERA, .230 OBA) but just pedestrian on the road (4.61 ERA, .313 OBA), a trend that continued into the postseason when his one really bad start was also his only one away from Busch Stadium.
Now in 2012, Garcia had a strong April and an average May, but has been on the DL with a shoulder impingement since getting shelled by the Astros on June 5. He is due to make his third rehab start on Thursday and could rejoin the Cardinals’ rotation soon afterward, but the team has to be wondering just what they’ll get out of the 26-year-old lefty down the stretch.
The St. Louis rotation could certainly use another arm given the immense workload taken on Adam Wainwright, Lance Lynn, Jake Westbrook, and Kyle Lohse, but given their precarious position in the playoff standings (as of August 7 they are 2.5 games out of the second Wild Card spot), the defending champs can’t afford to give away any games.
However, should he be able to regain his old form, Garcia could be the most valuable addition any team makes in the final two months of the season.
