With their first round pick in the 2012 draft (21), the Patriots selected former Syracuse standout Chandler Jones. The pass rusher was thought to be a work-in-progress, possessing extreme raw abilities that would need time to develop into NFL talent. Jones, however, thought otherwise and has been proving he deserves to start right away.
As the right defensive end, Jones has been running with the first-team defense for the majority of camp. Greg Bedard of the Boston Globe credited the 22-year-old for “enter[ing] camp much stronger than anticipated” and possessing “pass rush moves more advanced than your typical early-entry, first-round pick.” He is proving scouts wrong and has been a pleasant surprise for the Patriots.
Mark Anderson and Andre Carter, the only two players to record double-digit sacks for New England last year, are both gone and the defense is truly lacking. Jones claims he is just trying to learn the playbook and move the defense forward; the team ranked 31st in total yards and passing yards allowed last season, so they could use his help.
In Tuesday’s joint practice against the Saints, Jones continued to impress. Pro Bowl left tackle Jermon Bushrod spent the day going up against the rookie and had only good things to say about him. “He definitely looks the part,” said Bushrod, “I had a few reps against him today. I think he’s going to have a good career in the league.” Jones showed an arsenal of speed-rushing moves and proved he could cause problems at the line, as he was able to swat a Drew Brees pass to the ground for an incomplete pass.
Some feel the rookie has many of the same attributes as Jason Pierre-Paul. “He has that length,” claimed Bushrod, “A good-looking physical specimen, man, long arms, long player. He seems like he plays with good power.” During Super Bowl XLVI, Pierre-Paul gave quarterback Tom Brady a number of problems and was an integral part of the Giants’ win. Now, Jones has the potential to turn the tables and cause other teams similar problems. It’s too early to tell, but with his work ethic and raw talent, its not that unlikely.
