The often reliable Curtis Granderson has hit a bit of a rough patch the past few weeks. In the last 28 days the Grandyman is a meager .232 with an OBP of .290 and an OPS of .646. This schneid has come during a stretch where the New York Yankees have dropped twelve of their last twenty, and the once presumed dead Baltimore Orioles have come charging back to narrow the difference at the top of the division to a mere 4.5 games.
Granderson had a good outing Wednesday against the Detroit Tigers, driving in 4 runs and knocking his 33rd ball over the fence, but followed up that performance going 0-3 with two strikeouts. This slump forced manager Joe Girardi to drop Granderson from lead-off back down to sixth in order.
Since the All-Star break Granderson has hit .213 with seven homers and 18 RBIs and an OBP of .275, a significant drop from his first half numbers of .248/.352 with 23 homers and 48 RBIs.
For a team that is already 5-7 without Alex Rodriguez’s bat, the Yankees need Granderson to return to form fast or they may find themselves with company atop the AL East entering the late stages of August.
