As en vogue as it may be to rip on Carl Crawford and his $142m contract, the embattled Red Sox outfielder has been beating the heck out of the baseball of late. In the past 14 days Crawford is slugging .694 with a .327 average. He’s hit five doubles, two triples and three home runs in the past 12 days. Has the old Carl Crawford finally returned? I wouldn’t hold my breath just yet. While Crawford’s slugging is soaring, so too is his luck. With a BABip of over .400 in his last 15 games, regression to the mean indicates that this production is nothing more than an aberration. Crawford’s at bats have still been less than stellar, his pitcher per plate appearance is actually worse than last season (from 3.89 to 3.69) and he’s still not drawing walks (only 2BBs in his last 81 plate appearances).
Still, Crawford is getting there. According to Manager Bobby Valentine he looks more confident and is seeing the ball better. That’s nothing but good news for a team that has had anything but.
