What to watch for in Giants preseason opener

The defending champion Giants take the field for their preseason opener against the Jaguars on Friday night amid an absence of any real media attention. While their fellow Meadowlands resident Jets garner all the talk about fights on the practice field, unorthodox position battles, and the incomparably controversial Tim Tebow, the G-Men are content to simply go about their business under the radar and — despite two Super Bowl rings in the past five years — a surprising lack of respect.

However, that’s not to say that there are no storylines coming out of Giants camp, and most of them come in the form of position battles. At the forefront is the wide receiver spot, where Hakeem Nicks’ injury and Mario Manningham’s departure has left the door open for some little-known receivers like Jerrel Jernigan, Ramses Barden, and rookie Rueben Randle to seize the spotlight when the team takes the field on Friday.

Additionally, the Giants’ linebacking corps has yet to formulate a serious plan for how they’re going to solve the assignments for their 4-3 base defense. and part of the reason for that is indecision about how to deploy newly-acquired Keith Rivers. The pass-rushing specialist played at the WILL spot for the most part during his time in Cincinnati, but the Giants aren’t even sure yet if they’re going to use him as a starter or simply in obvious passing situations as part of a blitz package.

Finally, one more person that the Giants want to get on the field as much as possible is defensive tackle Marvin Austin. The former second-round pick out of UNC missed all of last year with a torn pectoral muscle that he suffered during the preseason, which combined with his eligibility issues during his senior year with the Tar Heels means that he hasn’t played football for any extended length of time in two years. The Giants still think that Austin has the potential to be a dominant force on the interior line, but he has to prove that he can get it done on the field in order to made any headway in what is already a crowded defensive line rotation.
