The importance of forward Justin Abdelkder to the Red Wings third line cannot be overlooked. Heading into his fourth NHL season, the 25-year-old is a restricted free agent and currently in negotiations with the team for a multi-year deal. And though there haven’t been any signs that a deal is imminent, GM Ken Holland is well aware of just how valuable the defensive play and forechecking that Abdelkader offers is to the team’s overall success, going so far as to compare him to past players Kris Draper and Kirk Matlby, both of whom were lunch pail-type guys who became fan favorites in the blue collar city of Detroit.
“He’s real important to our team,” Holland said. “Like Maltby and Draper were in their day. He plays hard, he brings it every day, he provides an ingredient. He’s comfortable dropping his gloves. He can chip in some goals. Mike Babcock was using him on the penalty kill last season.
“Negotiations are ongoing. We’re going to get it done. We’re going to find something both sides feel good about.”
