After trading Robin Lopez, the Phoenix Suns were left with few options to back emerging center Marcin Gortat. In hopes of filling that void, the team signed 16-year veteran Jermaine O’Neal.
The 1996 draft’s 17th overall pick has enjoyed moderate success over his NBA career, highlighted by 6 consecutive All-Star appearances from 2001-2006. He has career averages of 13.7 points, 7.4 rebounds, and most importantly 1.9 blocks. Recent years, however, have been a disappointment.
Last season, he played in 25 games for the Boston Celtics and averaged 5.0 points, 5.4 rebounds and 1.7 blocks per game. Despite his underperformance, the 33-year-old feels he can play better this season. He credited Boston for being an “unbelievable sports town” but feels it “wasn’t necessarily the best fit basketball wise.”
After the Celtics decided to let him go, O’Neal considered retirement but quickly changed his mind and decided to have Orthokine knee procedure. He now feels in a “fantastic position” to be successful and play “physically” for the Suns this year.
If O’Neal can return to his old form, the Suns will be great defensively in the paint. Gortat averaged 1.5 blocks last season and should only improve. O’Neal will certainly add around 2 more, as he has always played well defensively. Aside from adding a presence on the court, Suns president Lon Babby wants him to be a “veteran leader.” To make room for O’Neal, they waived center Brad Miller and guard Jerome Dyson.
