The attempt by Shawne Merriman to resurrect his career with the Buffalo Bills came to an unceremonious end on Monday when the team confirmed that they had released the former Pro Bowl linebacker. Merriman has been besieged by injuries over the past four seasons, appearing in just 23 games over that time and registering four sacks. It was a far cry from the player who took the league by storm in 2005, winning Defensive Rookie of the Year with the Chargers and leading the NFL with 17 sacks the following season.
Merriman’s 2011 campaign was cut short after five games due to a torn Achilles tendon, and he was not able to show the Bills that his had regained enough speed and explosiveness in training camp to be worthy of a roster spot this year. He will now become a free agent and look to catch on elsewhere.
