The biggest weakness that the Philadelphia Eagles have is not at linebacker, safety, or offensive line. It’s the quarterback position. Michael Vick is the most explosive player in the league when healthy, but as his history has shown, he’s almost never healthy. Vick took a brutal hit from the Patriots’ Jermaine Cunningham on Monday night, and though X-rays showed that he did not suffer a fracture, there is almost certainly a bruise that will take a few weeks to heal and could force him to sit out the team’s season opener against Cleveland.
Whether Vick is able to return in time to start Week 1 isn’t necessarily the big issue here, but rather the fragility that he brings to the starting quarterback position, and therefore the Eagles’ season as a whole. Vick’s small size and style of play make him far more likely to get injured than most starting QBs, and this year they don’t even have a similar-styled backup like Vince Young who can come in and run the same offense, just perhaps with less potency.
If Philadelphia is forced to turn to Mike Kafka for any length of time this season, then they’re probably going to have a really hard time scoring points.
