How much money did Melky Cabrera cost himself?

Melky Cabrera not only destroyed his reputation with his positive PED test, he also cost himself a boatload of money. The Giants outfielder was in the midst of a too-good-to-be-true season with unrestricted free agency looming this winter, and many felt that he could be in line for a deal worth as much as $80 million over five or six years. Now, however, though Jerry Crasnick of ESPN reports that there was at least one prediction that he could still something along the lines of 3 years and $30 million, the overwhelming majority of executives don’t think that his payday will be anywhere near that.

What it really boils down to is whether Cabrera can convince anyone that he didn’t start juicing until this season. In 2011 with the Royals, Cabrera was an above-average offensive player for the first time in his career, yet still nowhere near the level at which he was performing this season. Consider the disparity between his past three years:

2010: .255/.317/.354
2011: .305/.339/.470
2012: .346/.390/.516

Of course, that’s going to be a hard pill to swallow for any GM. The fact of the matter is that it’s far more likely that it was the 2011 season in which Cabrera first started seeing the tangible effects of taking banned supplements, in which case his ceiling for a contract this coming offseason might be more like 2 years and $10 million.
