Well, that was predictable. After holding out for the first half of the preseason, Steelers wide receiver Mike Wallace will sign his one-year restricted free agent tender for ~$2.7 million dollars and report to training camp this week. Though the exact date for his arrival isn’t known yet, it seems unlikely that Wallace will suit up for the team’s third preseason game on Saturday given his lack of conditioning and work with the team to this point.
Wallace staged his holdout with the intention of getting a long-term deal more on the level that elite receivers like Larry Fitzgerald and Calvin Johnson have received in the last two years. But although he has averaged 1,225 yards over the past two seasons, Wallace’s limited NFL experience (he’s entering his fourth year) precludes him from the type of career-making payday that those other two received after their 7th and 5th seasons, respectively.
