What is Nick Swisher worth?

With Jon Heyman reporting that Nick Swisher is seeking a Jayson Werth contract when he hits free agency this offseason, the prevailing attitude around baseball circles has been ‘Seriously???’ It’s not that Swisher isn’t a valuable player — he is. But the fact of the matter is that a) he didn’t provide the production that Werth did in the years leading up to free agency (Werth’s WAR was 15.5, Swisher’s 10.6) and b) the 7-year, $126 million contract that Werth got from Washington was, and continues to be seen as a huge error in judgment on the part of the Nationals.

However, as FanGraphs points out, Swisher does compare favorably to another outfielder who just recently got a hefty extension from his current team — Andre Ethier. When looked at through the prism of Ethier’s 5-year, $85 million deal that he signed last month, one could see Swisher commanding something similar, or perhaps even slightly bigger given that teams will be bidding against each other. Of course, one also can’t discount the fact that Swisher will be turning 32 in November and has probably seen his best days, whereas Ethier is 2.5 years younger.

An unintended consequence of Melky Cabrera's 50 game suspension has been an uptick in the amount of conversation about what Nick Swisher is going to get as a free agent this winter.
