With the final roster cuts just days away, the Philadelphia Eagles are narrowing down the list of who’s going to be comprising their depth chart. Linebacker was obviously one of the least impressive positions for the team last season, something that they have made a painstaking effort to fix this offseason, first with the trade for the Texans’ DeMeco Ryans, and then with the second round selection of Mychal Kendricks out of California.
Thus far in camp, Ryans has been every bit as good as advertised, and Kendricks has impressed the coaching staff enough to the point that he appears to already have locked down the starting strongside linebacker spot. The weakside position is still up for grabs, however, as are some of the backup and special teams roles on the unit.
Jamar Chaney, Brian Rolle, Casey Matthews, and Akeem Jordan all got starts at linebacker last season, though Chaney was the only one who was a mainstay throughout the year. He and Rolle are the likely frontrunners for the WILL spot this year, but Chaney’s current hamstring injury might prohibit him from getting it in Week 1. Either way, however, both will make the roster and see time in the rotation, while Matthews and Jordan will almost certainly be there as well for backup and special teams duties.
