Tom Verducci: Thome reaches 600 with humility, grace and country power

Jim Thome’s 600th home run on Monday night was more than just a milestone achievement for a future Hall of Famer, it was a win for Major League Baseball as well. Renowned as one of the nicest people in the game today, Thome joined the 600 club without a trace of arrogance or controversy, which is more than you can say for most of the other recent members.

Five players have reached 600 home runs since 2002 (Barry Bonds, Sammy Sosa, Ken Griffey Jr., Alex Rodriguez, and now Thome), and only Griffey and Thome did it absent of any whispers of steroid use. And while Thome may lack the charisma or name recognition of the rest, it’s nevertheless an emphatic win for the good guys of the game.

Jim Thome has always been thought of as one of baseball’s nicest men and now he has a lasting place among the game’s most unforgettable home run hitters, writes Tom Verducci.
