Could the Pistons make a move for Jose Calderon?

It's evident that the Detroit Pistons could have one the league's most dynamic frontcourt in a year or two. It's also been blatantly obvious that the Pistons are in desperate need help at point guard.

While both Brandon Knight and Rodney Stuckey play well together, the duo appear to be a redundancy in terms of their style of play. Moving Knight to the 2 and bringing in a pure point guard such as Jose Calderon could be one of the remaining pieces Detroit needs to make a bona fide run in the East.

The Toronto Raptors are most likely going to have their fair share of offers for Calderon. The Utah Jazz, Indiana Pacers, and Dallas Mavericks could all be in the market for the 31-year-old Spaniard, with the Jazz and Pacers being able offer up the most tangible assets while the Mavericks could most likely take back a bad contract or two.

Still, the Pistons are below the luxury tax this season, and as of now have roughly $42.2 million committed in salary next season. General Manager Joe Dumars and the Pistons are still going to be saddled with $28.1M in cap holds, so it's likely any move they are going to make is via a trade. Detroit could package a protected pick(s) along with Corey Maggette and Austin Daye’s expiring contracts to land Calderon and perhaps take one of Toronto's bad contracts as well.

But that probably wouldn't be enough to lure the biggest trade piece this winter. Calderon has a PER of 20.01 (6th amongst point guards who play 25 minutes+ per game), averaging 11.2 points, 7.5 assists per game and is close to being 50/40/90 player (field goal percentage, three point percentage, free throw percentage).
